Study Abroad Scholarships
The University Honors College provides funding for Honors Scholars who plan to study abroad through the Jeremy M. Jacobs and the John D. Gallatin International Honors Scholarships. The maximum award amounts are $500 for summer, $1500 for one semester, $2500 for a full academic year.
Eligibility requirements:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time, matriculated University at Buffalo students in good standing in the Honors College .
- Applicants must have already applied for a study abroad or exchange program.
- Applicants must propose to study abroad for at least one semester during the academic year (consideration will be given to summer study abroad programs).
- Applicants must participate in an overseas academic program for full-time credit (6 credit hours during summer will be considered full-time).
- John D. Gallatin or Jeremy M. Jacobs International Honors Scholarship recipients may receive this award only once.
Criteria:
- Students who go on University at Buffalo or SUNY-sponsored programs will be given preference, but those planning to enroll in programs sponsored by other universities may also apply.
- Applications from students who have never studied or traveled abroad are particularly welcome. Students are encouraged to study abroad in a country or region in which they have not already lived or studied extensively.
- An outline of how the study abroad program selected and location aids the student's academic and personal development will be an important factor in the review process.
- Students who intend to return to UB for at least one semester following the experience will be given preference.
- Recipients agree to assist in promoting international education at UB by coordinating their service requirement through either the Honors College or the Study Abroad Office.
Award Guidelines:
- The Honors Council will review all applications and make all award decisions.
- The decisions of the Honors Council will be final and will not be subject to appeal.
- In its allocation of scholarships, the Honors Council will strive to maintain a reasonable balance of distributions amongst overseas destinations and academic interests of recipients.
- Scholarship payments will be made directly to recipient's University at Buffalo Student Account.
Applications:
Applications will require minimal background information, a resume, one academic recommendation (academic recommendations may not be obtained from Honors Council members), a budget, and a personal statement (maximum two typed pages) clearly outlining how the study abroad program and location selected aids the student's academic and personal development.
Applications are typically due October 1 and April 1 of each semester. Applications are now being accepted for Spring 2008 study abroad experiences and are due Monday, October 1, 2007. All applications must be received in the Honors Office (214 Talbert Hall) by 4:30 P.M. on the due date.
