The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships through a national competition to sophomores and juniors who have outstanding academic potential and intend to pursue advanced degrees in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Students planning to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a research career rather than a career in private practice. This scholarship covers expenses for tuition, fees, books and room and board up to $7,500 annually. Sophomore level recipients receive two years of support and Junior level recipients receive one year of support. To be competitive, students must have at least an A- average (3.7 GPA). Research experience is required. Students must be nominated through the University Honors Program.
In order to have ample time for our office to work with the nominees, we are asking that interested students submit the following information to the Honors office by 4:30p.m. Friday, October 6, 2006: a resume highlighting career goals, leadership positions, and awards received, as well as the answers to the following questions in an essay format (Maximum length is one typed page per question).
1. What are your professional aspirations? Indicate in which area(s) of mathematics, science, or engineering you are considering making your career and specify how your current academic program and your overall educational plans will assist you in achieving this goal.
2. Describe an activity or experience that has been important in clarifying or strengthening your motivation for a career in science, mathematics, or engineering.
From this information, the committee will select the four UB student nominees by the end of October.
We have had considerable success in helping students submit winning applications. More information about the Barry M. Goldwater scholarship can be found at http://www.act.org/goldwater. You are invited to attend a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship information session on Wednesday, September 20, 2006 in 12 Capen Hall at 4:00PM. If you have any additional questions, please contact Hadar Borden in the Honors office in 214 Talbert Hall.
