The Office of Residence Life, in conjunction with the Honors College, is pleased to announce that they are accepting applications for participants in the Shared Interest Housing (SIH) Honors Corps in Governors Complex. This opportunity is open to students in good standing in both the Honors College and within Residence Life who are interested in playing an active role in the Honors community and in the Residence Life community. Participants are expected to be available to tutor peers for 2 to 4 hours per week as well as collaborate in the planning and implementation 6 educational and community service initiatives per semester. This opportunity is available to all majors.
Accepted participants for this voluntary leadership opportunity will be assigned to a desirable first-floor suite in the Governors Complex, without taking part in the housing lottery process.
Applications will be available January 16th at the Honors College office at 214 Talbert Hall and are due by February 1st to Nigel Marriner.
Partners in the Parks is a new program developed in cooperation with the National Parks Service offering participants the opportunity to experience and appreciate the unique natural treasures that make up America*s national park system.
Seven projects are planned for 2008. Each will be hosted by a select Honors program working in partnership with a regional national park to offer students and faculty unprecedented access and insights into the park through an extended 5-6 day excursion. Projects will include educational and recreational seminars led by expert faculty and NPS rangers specifically designed to take advantage of the unique resources within each park.
Last year*s pilot project at Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah was a roaring success. Students experienced a full range of park activities including administration, tourism, back country camping, instructional seminars, and outdoor adventures. Faculty and park rangers led participants in a wide range of educational and recreational activities in both group and individual settings.
2008 projects will offer a variety of terrain, ecosystems, and adventures to choose from.

architecture, biology, geology, kayaking, beach combing, hiking
* Bryce Canyon National Park (Utah) - May 2008: Geology, fire
management, endangered species, archeology, hiking, camping, backpacking
* Big Thicket National Preserve (Texas) - March, Spring Break,
2008: Ecology, invasive species, biodiversity inventory, hiking, canoeing
* Fire Island to Ellis Island (New York) - May 2008: History,
geology, urban living, culture, hiking, sailboat excursion
* Grand Canyon/Parashant National Monument (Arizona) - May 2008:
History, archeology, biology, writing, hiking, camping
* Mammoth Cave National Park (Kentucky) - May 2008: Geology,
economics, development, canoeing, hiking, spelunking,
* Zion National Park (Utah) - May 2008: Geology, biology,
history, soundscapes, hiking, backpacking, camping
