The Writing Place

Posted by Jessica on September 11, 2008 in Tutoring

The Writing Place is a FREE tutorial center located in 209A Baldy Hall where students can receive feedback on their writing. Our trained tutors will help you identify areas needing improvement and suggest techniques for revision.

While the Writing Place is NOT an editing service and does not “fix” papers by correcting grammatical errors, our tutors are ready to respond to your writing and guide you through the writing process. Students are encouraged to bring in papers, essays, projects, etc.

Stop by the Writing Place anytime during the semester. Your tutor will first focus on areas such as your thesis, organization, and development before helping you to improve your sentence structure, punctuation, or spelling. After meeting with your tutor, he or she may suggest a second conference to work on the same piece, depending upon how much progress is made.

Management Student competition

Posted by Jessica on September 11, 2008 in Uncategorized

INFORMS is sponsoring a new competition to encourage student research and practice. with societal impact. This competition is intended to recognize student-led projects with real-world clients that generate significant societal impacts beyond increased profits or reduced costs. These projects could highlight innovation through theory, creative computational methods, and should address implementation challenges. Operations research and management science methods and tools, broadly construed, must be central to the success of the projects submitted for consideration. Submissions could reflect and be of interest to multiple disciplinary and application-area interests associated with various INFORMS colleges, societies and sections. For example, a project may represent a humanitarian application as well as novel logistics models and algorithms.

The process starts by submission to INFORMS of an intention to apply by December 1, 2008. The letter of intent consists of: a paragraph describing the project, a list of team member(s), faculty advisor(s), if any, the partner organization, and a contact person within that organization. Full applications should be sent to INFORMS by March 1, 2009. The application consists of: a cover letter, 60-word abstract, 2 – 3 page summary of project achievements and a letter of nomination by the partner organization or a faculty member describing the societal impact of the work and the portion of the work (including the project duration) solely completed by the student entrant(s).
