Ambassador of France to the United States visits UB

Posted by jdudek on March 23, 2009 in Academic Presentations

His Excellency Pierre Vimont, Ambassador of France to the United States, will be visiting the University at Buffalo (UB) on Wednesday, April 8, 2009. This is only the second time that a sitting French Ambassador has visited Buffalo. Ambassador Vimont will be accompanied by Ambassador Guy Yelda, the new Consul General of France to New York, and Dr. Pascal Delisle, Cultural Attaché and Director of the University Partnership Fund at the Embassy. This is truly a landmark event in the long history of France’s involvement in the Western New York and Niagara Region. We are most grateful to Pascal Soares, Honorary Consul of France in Buffalo, for making this visit possible.

You are cordially invited to attend Ambassador Vimont’s public lecture at UB titled “The United States and France and the Renewal of Transatlantic Relations,” which will be delivered at the Drama Theatre, Center for the Arts (CFA), UB North Campus on April 8 at 3:00 pm. A question and answer period will follow. You are also welcome to join the reception for our French guests immediately following the lecture in the CFA Atrium. Please be advised that if you will be coming to UB from off campus to attend the lecture and reception you should park in the Special Event Parking Lot, a section of which will be reserved for this event. Please bring a print-out of this invitation with you to show the parking attendant. Kindly refer to the North Campus map for the location of the Special Event Parking Lot: http://www.buffalo.edu/buildings/maps/NorthCampus.pdf

In conjunction with the Ambassador’s visit, University Libraries, in cooperation with Professor Jean-Jacques Thomas, the Melodia E. Jones Chair of French, has created a set of special exhibits on the role of France in the region and the study of French language and culture at UB. The exhibits are free and open to the public and will be on display from the beginning of April to mid-May.

An exhibit in Special Collections, 420 Capen Hall, is titled, “Marshall, Jones, and Park—French History and Culture and the University at Buffalo.” A second exhibit at Lockwood Library, “The Julian Park Collection: Rare Books Portray French History and Culture,” presents the extraordinary collection of Julian Park, son of Roswell Park and the founding dean of UB’s College of Arts and Sciences, who developed and nurtured French studies at UB, facilitated the establishment of the Melodia Jones Chair, and bequeathed his remarkable collection of French literature to the University. For exhibit hours, please consult the University Libraries website: http://library.buffalo.edu/

“The Turkish Contribution to Christian-Muslim Dialogue”

Posted by nmarrine on November 7, 2008 in Academic Presentations

Turkish GSA is organising a dialogue lecture and we thought you’d be interested.

Over the centuries the Turkish experience has been one of religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue. Distinct Christian churches and Jewish communities expelled from Europe in the Middle Ages have found a safe haven in the welcoming atmosphere of Turkey.  Such an understanding of peaceful coexistence is of utmost necessity in an increasingly divided and globalized world. This talk will focus on that Turkish experience of religious tolerance and how it guide inspire peace in the other contexts.

The Ft. Thomas Michel, S.J., Ph.D., will speak on “The Turkish Contribution to Christian-Muslim Dialogue” Monday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. in Norton 112 (Woldman Theatre) at UB North Campus. Father Michel is currently on the Academic Council of the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. He formerly served at the Asia Desk of the VaticanPontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and later was head of the Office for Islam in the same Vatican department. He is now secretary of the Jesuit Secretariat for Interreligious Dialogue in Rome, Italy, and ecumenical secretary for the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. His talk is being organised by the Turkish Graduate Student Association. Faculty, students and the public are invited.

We’d appreciated if you invite people who might be interested in this lecture. The flyer of the lecture is attached: Flyer.

Hope to see you there.
