Documentary Screening - Honors College Exclusive

Posted by Nigel on September 25, 2009 in Honors Program Announcements

A former Honors College student, Hannah Dobbs, has just completed her first documentary “Shelter: A Squatumentary” and we have been fortunate enough that she will be making a stop here at UB on her national promotional tour.

The screening will be on Monday, October 5th and start at 5:10 in Talbert 212, the Honors Seminar room. The screening will last about 60 minutes and Hannah will then lead a discussion about the topics raised in the film for an additional 45 minutes to an hour.

Space is limited to 20 people so if you would like to attend please RSVP to Nigel at nmarrine@buffalo.edu to reserve a space. Food and beverages will be provided.

A summary for her film is as follows: “In economically turbulent times, rent and home-ownership have become unaffordable at best and impossible at worst. Thus, people all over the world continue a long tradition of reclaiming this basic human right by squatting. Shelter: a Squatumentary is a documentary film that explores the squatting movement in the East Bay from 2004 to 2007. We follow three examples of the struggle for housing in an unaffordable marketplace such as the San Francisco Bay Area. Hellarity House, Banana House, and Power Machine are stories of squatters who have found one tentative solution to the ongoing housing crisis.”

To view the trailer go to: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1488083/

Here is some more information from Hannah: “I finished the Advanced Honors Program in December 2008, and I have spent most of my time since promoting this documentary. The film took over three years to finish on a zero-dollar budget. We completed it in 2007, and now that I have graduated, I finally have time to show it to the world. Our group is currently working on another documentary that looks more deeply into property law and its intersections with the squatting movement. If we’re lucky, this time we’ll have a budget!”

Study Abroad Spring 2010 London

Posted by Nigel on September 21, 2009 in Honors Experiences, Honors Program Announcements, Study Abroad

UB Study Abroad is pleased to announce the Spring 2010 semester program in London, led by Dr. Debra Street, a professor of sociology at UB. The program will be hosted and supported by CAPA (Centres for Academic Programs Abroad). The UB Semester Program in London has been developed by Dr. Street to provide students with an insider’s view of the UK from a sociological perspective.

Students will enroll in:
· 2 regular 3-credit courses that will present an in-depth and comparative analysis of social policy and the social organization of health care in the UK. These courses will combine classroom work with related site visits around London.
· an internship for 6 credits with an organization in London that closely matches their academic interests.
· an independent study for 3 credits in which students will pursue a topic of interest related to the course material, the internship, or another topic that fits with the contextual and geographic theme of the program.

These courses match existing UB courses in Sociology that can be used to fulfill requirements for majors and minors in Sociology and Interdisciplinary Studies. Interested students from other disciplines are welcome and advised to check with their departments about using these courses for major credit.

This program is a wonderful opportunity for UB students and we strongly encourage you to visit our website at www.buffalo.edu/studyabroad for more information about this program and to contact our office at studyabroad@buffalo.edu if you have any questions.

*** Given that this is opportunity incorporates Study Abroad, Internship and Independent Study elements it will count as 3 Experiences in fulfillment of your Honors requirements.***
