Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates

Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), with funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), offers summer research experiences in programs designed to give undergraduates an opportunity to learn and become active participants in basic biological and biomedical research.

The Summer of 2010 will be the 58th Anniversary of Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Research Experience for Undergraduates. This is a program designed for college juniors who will benefit from an intensive pre-graduate (PhD) research experience. We are interested in all applicants including those from non-research universities who have had limited opportunities to participate in research, under-represented minority students and students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The program will run from June 7 – August 13, 2010.

Current junior standing – member of the Class of 2011

Student career goals should focus on achieving a graduate or professional degree in the biomedical or natural sciences.

Selected participants receive a $3,500 stipend plus room.
USA citizen or permanent residents only.

CURE – Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences

Selected participants receive a $3,500 stipend plus room.

USA citizen or permanent residents only.

Must be from a minority group (e.g. African American, Hispanic American, Native American Indian).

The major objectives of the program are (1) to introduce you to scientific research through a project supervised by graduate faculty members, (2) to help you develop your own philosophy of science, (3) to give you an opportunity to discover and experience the graduate student lifestyle, and (4) if you have not already decided on a field of specialization, to aid in selecting your PhD program. Selected students will be assigned to laboratories of graduate professors in molecular biology, biophysics, genetics, bioinformatics, nanotechnology, biochemistry, immunology, or pharmacology as your choice of research interest and training indicate.

Applications are accepted from students who have completed their junior year in college (Class of 2011) and have demonstrated a high ability and interest in a scientific career. The program is held each summer for 10 weeks. Each student works on an independent research project under the guidance of RPCI scientific staff and spends time attending various seminars. All students present their research results (oral & poster) during a scientific conference held at the end of the program.

Global Change Education Program

Posted by Elizabeth on December 21, 2009 in Honors Experiences, Research Information and Opportunities, Student Job Opportunities

Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

The program recruits primarily undergraduates in their sophomore and junior years, but outstanding freshmen and seniors are also considered. All qualified students are encouraged to apply, and minority and female students are particularly encouraged. SURE Fellows are expected to reapply for a second year of research (and out years) with their mentors when possible after successful completion of their SURE appointments.

The approximately ten-week SURE program generally begins in early June through mid-August. Fellows attend a one-week orientation and focus session that includes a series of lectures to provide a detailed overview of all research areas within the BER global change mission. Fellows also receive more focused information on the specific areas in which they expect to conduct research. Following the orientation and focus sessions, SURE fellows travel to their nine-week research assignments at national laboratories or universities (or other participating DOE funded contractors) to conduct BER-supported global change research. Each Fellow has a mentor who directs and monitors his/her summer research experience.

Mentors are recruited from BER global change research areas, including ASP, ARM, EMP, PER, and TCP. Assuming that appointments are distributed relatively evenly in each of the program areas, each area will have approximately four to six Fellows and mentors, annually.

Fellows’ receive the following benefits:

  • A weekly stipend of $475.00, which is paid every two weeks.
  • Travel expenses (including airfare, ground transportation, lodging, and adjusted Per Diem) to attend the Orientation and End-of-Summer Workshop.
  • Travel expenses (including airfare and ground transportation) from the Orientation to the research facility.
  • Travel expenses (including airfare and ground transportation) from the research facility to the End-of-Summer Workshop, and then to their homes.
  • Fellows are responsible for their housing arrangements and costs, food and transportation while at their research facility.

We anticipate selecting approximately 20 SURE Fellows annually in a competitive process involving the selection of applications by a review panel.

Requirements: 3.0 out of 4.0 minimum GPA overall and in major. U.S. Citizenship required.

To apply, complete the application form on the website (http://www.atmos.anl.gov/GCEP/) that includes a Statement of Career Goals and Objectives. In addition, provide three letters of recommendation and copies of transcripts. Please submit a paper application should it prove difficult for you to apply electronically. Applications are accepted electronically or by mail beginning the first Monday in October through 11:59.59 P.M. PST on December 31. Applicants are notified of their status in early April each year.

Returning SURE students who have successfully completed past SURE appointment and have maintained GPA requirements can reapply on the GCEP website at http://www.atmos.anl.gov/GCEP/Applications/ReturningSURE.html.
