Designed as a seminar in the nation’s capital followed by an internship placement with programming and rigorous academic study in one of the above cities, each program will help students gain a valuable comparative understanding of culture and professional life – an important asset in today’s global workforce. Eastern Illinois University invites undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, friends and adult family to experience the land and people of the Andes Mountains, Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands July 21 through Aug. 9, 2009. Geography, earth science, culture and history are part of this four-credit course titled “Environment, Society and Culture of Ecuador.” Program fee includes first rate lodging, international and in-country airfares, meals, boat and ground transportation, estimated $6,600 plus tuition. Unite For Sight: Recruiting and Training New Leaders in Global Health
Unite For Sight has been featured weekly on CNN International and in The New York Times
Unite For Sight engages, inspires, and trains volunteers to support and assist eye clinics globally. Volunteers receive hands-on training in international community-based eye care, public health, and international development, and while immersed in effective Unite For Sight programs, they gain skills to become new leaders in global health dedicated to creating lasting solutions.
With the assistance of volunteers like you, Unite For Sight has restored sight to 18,500 patients and provided eye care to more than 600,000. Unite For Sight supports eye clinics by investing human and financial resources in their social ventures to eliminate patient barriers to eye care. Unite For Sight programs are sustainable, apply best practice principles in global health and development, and achieve effective change. Unite For Sight’s programs also demonstrate the highest standards in social entrepreneurship.
Student volunteers are encouraged to coordinate academic credit with their universities and pursue research studies

Dig a Castle in Belgium! (July 2009)
Eastern Illinois University School of Continuing Education, in partnership with the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, invites applications for the seventh season of its Summer Archaeology Program. The dates are June 29-July 31, 2009, and the program centers on the excavation of medieval Walhain Castle. Honors students may receive Honors credit, awarded in either History or Earth Sciences. The course is open to all students in good standing; there are no prerequisites, and no previous background in archaeology is required. The cost of the program, which includes tuition and fees, board and lodging –but not overseas airfare– is $4799. The deadline for applications is December 5. Each of these programs will begin in mid-May with a ten-day Washington, D.C. seminar. In this academically intensive component, students will learn about the nation’s capital as a basis for understanding their destination city, exploring Washington as a center not only of government and politics but international affairs, business, media and nonprofit work. They will also learn about the country and city in which they will live, study and intern.
When abroad in June and July, participants will be in three to four-and-a-half day internships that match their academic and professional interests. UB Study Abroad is pleased to announce that a Gilman Scholarship representative will be on-campus to present information about the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship on Thursday, September 18th from 3-4pm in 111 Talbert Hall. This is a wonderful opportunity and we strongly encourage you to attend!
Please note that the Gilman Scholarship is open to all US citizen undergraduates, in good academic standing, who meet the criteria listed below.
* The applicant must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant or provide proof that he/she will be receiving a Pell Grant at the time of application or during the term of their study abroad.
* The applicant is applying to or has been accepted into a study abroad program eligible for credit by the student’s accredited institution of higher education in the U.S.
* The applicant is studying abroad for at least 4 weeks in one country. Programs going to more than one country are eligible if the student will be studying in one country for at least 4 weeks.
* The applicant is studying abroad in any country except Cuba or a country on the State Department’s current Travel Warning <http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis_pa_tw_1168.html> list. The applicant is studying in the fall, spring, or academic year terms including winter inter-sessions. Summer only programs are not eligible.
